The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is one of the three immigration programs managed by Express Entry.

Express Entry is an online system that allows Canada to select and invite the most qualified candidates to apply for permanent residence. It also fast-tracks the processing time of applications, making it easier and quicker for you to start your new life in Canada.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting, understanding the nuances of this process can significantly boost your chances of success.

Understanding the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

The FSWP is part of the Express Entry system, a points-based online system designed for skilled workers aiming to settle in Canada permanently

This program values your skills, experience, and potential contributions to the Canadian economy.

To qualify, applicants must meet specific criteria in areas like skilled work experience, language ability, and education. These requirements are crucial for eligibility and lay the groundwork for a successful application.

Federal Skilled Worker Program Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker Visa, you must satisfy the following key requirements:

    • Skilled Work Experience: Your experience should fall within the National Occupational Classification (NOC) TEER categories 0, 1, 2, or 3. It’s essential that this experience, totaling at least one year (or 1,560 hours), is continuous, paid work within the last ten years.
    • Language Ability: Proficiency in English or French is mandatory, assessed through approved language tests like CELPIP and IELTS for English and TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French.
    • Education: Applicants must hold a certificate, diploma, or degree from a Canadian institution or its equivalent from a foreign institution, along with an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for immigration purposes.

If you meet these minimum requirements, you can create an Express Entry profile and enter the pool of candidates.

However, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee that you will be invited to apply. You also need to score high enough on the six selection factors to be eligible for the FSWP.

Six Selection Factors for the FSWP

    The six selection factors are:

    • Language skills
    • Education
    • Work experience
    • Age
    • Arranged employment in Canada
    • Adaptability

Each factor has a maximum number of points you can earn, for 100 points. You need to score at least 67 points to qualify for the FSWP.

The points you get for each factor depend on your personal circumstances, such as your education level, age, work experience, and so on. You can use the online tool to calculate your points based on your information.

The higher your score, the more likely you will receive an invitation to apply (ITA) for permanent residence. An ITA is issued to the highest-ranking candidates in the Express Entry pool based on their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

The CRS score differs from the FSWP score, as it also considers other factors such as your spouse or partner’s skills, provincial nomination, and Canadian education or work experience.

You can improve your FSWP and CRS scores by taking steps such as:

    • Improving your language skills
    • Completing another degree, diploma, or certificate
    • Gaining more work experience
    • Securing a valid job offer from a Canadian employer
    • Applying for a provincial nomination program (PNP)

    Application Process for the FSWP

The application process for the FSWP consists of the following steps

    • You must provide information about your skills, education, work experience, language ability, and other details. You will be given a CRS score and placed in the pool of candidates.
    • If you meet the minimum requirements for the FSWP and score high enough on the CRS, you may receive an ITA from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). You will have 60 days to submit your online application for permanent residence.
    • You need to fill out the online application form and upload the required documents, such as your passport, your language test results, your ECA report, your police certificates, and your proof of funds. You also need to pay the application fees and the biometrics fees.
    • You must give your fingerprints and photo at a designated biometrics collection service point. You have 30 days to do this after you submit your application.
    • IRCC will review your application and check your eligibility and admissibility. They may also request additional information or documents from you. The processing time for the FSWP applications is usually six months or less, but it may vary depending on your situation and the volume of applications.
    • If your application is approved, you will receive a confirmation of permanent residence (COPR) and a visa (if you need one) to travel to Canada. You must arrive in Canada before your COPR and visa expire. You must also bring your COPR and passport with you, as well as your proof of funds and any other documents that IRCC advises you to bring. You will become a permanent resident of Canada once you complete the landing process at the port of entry.

Benefits of Becoming a Permanent Resident of Canada

    • You can access social benefits such as health care, education, and pensions
    • You can apply for Canadian citizenship after meeting the residency requirements
